My iPhone does not rotate anymore!

July 7th, 2010 Marc-André 4 comments

Recently, I updated my iPhone to OS 4. A lot of cool new features! My personal favorites being Multitasking and Folders. However, a few days after the update, something strange started to occur: I couldn’t use the landscape view. When I turned my iPhone, the display didn’t rotate with it. Very annoying!

At first, I didn’t understand why. Then, I saw an icon I had never seen before in the status bar (top right):

Getting Gmail Storage Under Control – Really Needed ?

June 15th, 2010 Marc-André 2 comments

A while back, I blogged about switching from a desktop email client to the Web version of GMail, or in my case, Google Apps. And after trying it, I could seriously never go back to a desktop client application.

Emails are at the very root of my professional life. It needs to be “in the cloud” and accessible 24/7 from anywhere in the world.

I don’t want to download them locally,  update or troubleshoot a local application, and I don’t want a large overhead. And let’s face it; none of the email clients currently on the market can even remotely compete with GMail’s outstanding features like threaded emails, filters, labels and all those cools Labs features.

Unfortunately, this has also created a serious problem.

CMS Expo is great!

May 5th, 2010 Marc-André No comments

I have been in Chicago for 2 days now for CMS Expo 2010. Let me say that this is an outstanding conference! Very well organized, a lot of great speakers, a lot of great people, great food, great everything!

For me, it was a wonderful opportunity to finally meat with someone I’ve been working with for the past 5 years, Steve Kenow, one of the initiators of the ImpressCMS project. We have been working together since in the XOOPS days and started the ImpressCMS adventure together with other great people. We’ve been talking to each other nearly every week for the past few year, but yet again, I had still to meet with him! This was accomplished this week!

On my way to CMS Expo in Chicago

May 2nd, 2010 Marc-André No comments

Well, I got in Montreal Trudeau Airport at 2 PM today. My flight was at 4 so, more time then actually needed. But when I got to the Porter desk, the lady informed me that the boarding would start at 4:40 PM. 4:40 ? But my flight is at 4 ! Well no, seems I  was wrong. Flight is at 5! So I could actually arrived at the airport at 4 instead of 2… I really should check my tickets correctly next time!

Not a big deal though, because now I have a little more time to accomplish some outstanding work that needs to get done by tomorrow. And I have time for this blog post :-) .

When I pass through security, I beeped, even though I had no metal in me pockets. So I had the privilege of a real corporal search. The lady agent asked me if I preferred this to be performed by a man or a woman. Funny world we are living in ;-) . The good thing is, if I had something illegal on me, they would have definitely found it. Somehow I feel more secured :-) .

Change of topic: I can’t wait to get to Chicago to meet with Steve K., and Steve M. Never met them in person yet. It’s going to be great! And we’ll surely find some time to do some coding session for the upcoming ImpressCMS 1.3. It will actually be the first time I’m actually coding for ImpressCMS in the physical presence of other developers.

I’m also very excited about the flyers and posters I got printed today. It was a great collective effort by the ImpressCMS team. Thanks to Madfish, David J., Steve K, and Ana, our great designer at INBOX. The result is quite impressive! We’ll make the PDF available for download on the ImpressCMS web site very soon.

More blogging posts soon!

ImpressCMS at CMS Expo

May 1st, 2010 Marc-André 2 comments

The next few days will be awesome, I’m sure! Why ? Because, ImpressCMS will attend its very first North American conference, CMS Expo 2010 in Chicago from May 3rd to May 5th. We will have a booth there and intend to meet with as many people as possible. First, to let people know about our great Community Management System, but also to make as many connexions as possible! As I mentioned in one of the very first blog post I wrote on ImpressCMS Blog, people connecting with each other, this is the driving force of an open source project.

Reworking the way we do business

April 10th, 2010 Marc-André 3 comments

If you’ve been on this blog before, then you already saw a few mentions about 37signals, creator of Basecamp, Highrise and other great products. They recently launched a book: REWORK. It’is the logical sequel of their first book “Getting Real”, where they were exploring the key concepts which they have learned and used to build their products. That first book was focusing on building an application more then anything else. But many of the concepts they were applying at building a great product, they also applied at a higher level, management a successfull business. So a few years later, it was time for REWORK to go out, a summary of pretty much every interesting concept they explored in their blog “Signal vs. Noise”, in their talks, their conferences, etc…

My first post using Posterous

March 19th, 2010 Marc-André No comments
Recently, I was listening to a net@night podcast with Guy Kawasaki and he mentionned he was using a Posterous blog as part of its marketing/tweeting strategy. Basically, he's using AllTop to gather interesting news and then he's blogging about those in a Posterous blog, which then gets automatically tweeted. It's a great way to do it! So I thought I should try it! Exactly what I've been doing this morning.

I created an account on Posterous: http://marcan.posterous.com. I linked this account to my Twitter account, as well as my professional blog: http://malanciault.com.

I'm now actually writing this in an email which will be sent to my posterous email dropbox. If everything works as it should, this should create a new post on marcan.posterous.com, it should then get tweeted on my Twitter account, and then posted on malanciault.com. Oh, and it will also be posted on my Facebook account as I'm using the Twitter App on Facebook to automatically post my tweets on my Facebook account.

Fiew ! Round of applause for the Web 2.0 !

Now let's see how this will work. Hitting the Send button now…

I got my copy of REWORK!

March 13th, 2010 Marc-André No comments

Well, I was waiting this for a long time! After 3 amazing days at the Confoo conference, I got home yesterday evening, tired but the head full of new ideas and techniques I’ve heard about at the conference. I stopped by to check the mailbox. There was a key in our box. This means that a package was waiting for me in the other bigger mailbox. I opened it and here it was, the long awaited book we’ve all been waiting for: REWORK!

If you are even only remotely involved in web technologies or web business, you probably already heard about this book by 37signals Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. If not, well, what are you waiting for ? Have a look here.
